古德明英語軍事小故事：跳出鬼門關 (中英對照)

跳出鬼門關
After the failure of the Duke of Monmouth's revolt against JamesⅡ of England, John Swain, one of the Duke's supporters, was marched towards Bridgewater to stand trial. Knowing what his chances would be if he ever reached his destination, Swain decided to escape.As he marched along the Bridgewater road, with his wife and children walking glumly behind, he passed Loxley Wood. He stopped and asked his guards if he could demonstrate to his children his skills as a long jumper, so that they would have something to remember him by. His guards agreed, and as they stood back to watch Swain suddenly made three giant leaps from one stone to another across the nearby river and disappeared into the wood. The stones remain to mark his athletic skills, and suggest a triple jump of 41 feet!
英王詹姆斯二世敉平蒙默思公爵叛亂之后，參與叛亂的約翰．斯溫被押往布里奇沃特受審。他知道自己上到法庭，一定兇多吉少，決心逃命。在往布里奇沃特的路上，他看見路旁的洛克斯利樹林。跟在他后面的，是他愁眉苦臉的妻子和孩子。斯溫停下來，問衛兵可不可以讓他向孩子表演跳遠，給他們日后一點回憶。衛兵同意，就靠后看他表演。斯溫突然向附近那條河飛身一躍，從一塊石上再飛身跳到另一塊之上，連跳三下，越過河流，消失在樹林里。他踏腳的石塊，至今仍在，顯示了斯溫的不凡身手：那連環三跳，共跳了四十一英尺！
