during the battle of cherbourg,* 1944, the crew of an american tank, hit by a german shell, scrambled to a nearby doorway for cover. there they met a small man who was also ducking bullets. they asked for his autograph.
that was not unusual. the man was ernie pyle, the gi's reporter. he shared the fears, the pain, and the suffering of the men"who do the dying". in his column, which ran in 700 publications, he made sure that the folks back home knew exactly what their fighting men were going through.
by 1945, pyle was earning a six-figure income. but he could not desert the men whose stories needed telling, so he headed to the pacific for the invasion of okinawa. on 18 april, he was hit by japanese machine-gun fire, and died instantly. he was forty-four.
