點睛：
第一句的主干為he wrote in a wall street journal column…，直接引語是主句的賓語。直接引語被分成兩部分，一部分在主句前，另一部分在主句后。直接引語中首句的主干足the test...lies no( in...butin...however...，這是一個用副詞however連接的并列句。
注意：一些副詞有時可以當作連詞來使用。

in the face of意為“面對”。
