　　Many college students realize that it is a privilege toattend senior professors’ lectures. Oftentimes,those senior professors are unique in their teachingstyles, have an encyclopedic knowledge in theirdomains, and have acquired an efficient way tocommunicate with their students. However, thosesenior professorsappear to be always obsessed with academic research, social activities andother engagements.

　　許多大學生意識到參加教授的課程至關重要。通常，這些資深教授在教學上有自己的獨到之處，他們學識淵博，并能夠很好的與學生進行交談。但是，這些教授把大量時間都放在了科研，社會活動，以及其他活動上。

　　In some universities, authorities have to decree that senior professors should at least giverequired lectures during a semester. Some people hold that senior professors should lay moreemphasis on research, for their achievement will promote the advancement of science andtechnology. But I do not agree.

　　在許多大學里，校方要求教授一個學期至少上夠所要求的課程。許多人認為，教授應該把更多的精力放在研究上，因為他們的成果將會推動科學和技術的發展。但是我不贊同。

　　Firstly, while senior professors concentrate on research, they are likely to spend less timepreparing fora coming lecture. Though senior professors are likely to make more advancementof their research if they can absorb themselves in their study, they are required to take theresponsibility of cultivating talents for our society, which is more important. I still remember lateprofessor Yang Changji’s life pursuit. He said that he would be satisfied if he could cultivate acouple of backbones for China. Some may not clearly list how many books Professor Yang wroteduring his lifetime, but almost all Chinese people remember that he succeeded in cultivating agroup of people represented by Mao Zedong. In this sense, cultivating students of tremendouspromise is more important than carrying out academic research to make a name.

　　首先，如果教授把大量的時間放在研究上，那么，他們準備上課的時間就會減少。盡管教授會在研究領域有所建樹，前提是，他們會更加重視研究，但是，他們更有責任來培養有助于社會的人才，這更加重要。我仍然記得楊昌濟教授一生的追求。他說如果他能夠為中國培養出股肱之才，那么他就會感到非常滿足。人們可能記不清楊教授一生寫過多少書籍，但是幾乎所有中國人都記得他培養過多少人才。從這一點來說，培養學生比著書研究、功成名就更為重要。

　　Secondly, while senior professors give fewer lectures to students, young faculties would bedenied the opportunity to learn pedagogy from these senior professors. In the past, youngteachers would start their teaching career as assistants to senior professors. They wererequired to participate in lectures and tutor students so that young teachers would be able toacquire requisite skills, attitudes and other essentials of giving lectures. When occasions arise,senior professors would ask their assistant teachers to give democlasses so that seniors couldevaluate how much progress their assistants had made. However, young faculties find itdifficult to consult with their seniors, for seniors are always otherwise engaged, either inacademic research or in the social activities. As a result, when young faculties have to improvetheir pedagogy by trial and error, college students constitute guinea pigs.

　　第二，許多教授很少教學生，許多年輕教師也很少有機會能夠從教授那里學習教學方法。在過去，年輕教師會從助教開始干起，之后成為資深教授。人們允許他們參加課程，并輔導學生，這樣，年輕老師才能獲得所必須的技能以及其他一些教授課程所必須的知識。有時教授還會讓助教來試講，這樣，教授就能夠對助教的水平有一個了解。但是，年輕教師發現他們很難有機會與教授進行溝通，教授總是忙于各種活動之中，或是學術研究，或是社會活動。所以，當年輕教師想要提高自己的教學水平時，學生就成了試驗品。

　　In sum, it is senior professors’ responsibility to cultivate talents for the society and helpimprove young teachers’ pedagogy. Though they can make a name in research, theirpreference to research would be to the detriment of the cultivation of promising students inthe long run.

　　總結，教授有責任為社會培養人才，并幫助年輕老師提高教學水平。盡管他們能夠功成名就，他們對研究的大量投入將會對學生的長遠發展不利。
