蹩腳――BILGE，船底污水，引申為骯臟的、下三濫、劣質(zhì)的
大興――DASHY，浮華，華而不實，引申為假的、冒牌的、劣質(zhì)的
骯三――ONSALE，二手貨賤賣，引申為垃圾貨、形容人的品質(zhì)低劣
癟三――BEG SIR，乞丐先生，用來形容叫花子、難民、逃荒者等各式窮人，引申為最廣泛的罵人用語之一
這些至今仍被大量使用的俚語，組成殖民地上海的劣質(zhì)性語境，它們試圖為這個高度現(xiàn)代化的都市提供一種負面估量。
為了推銷劣質(zhì)文化和劣質(zhì)商品，某種相應的欺詐文化應運而生了，這導致了那些用以描述欺詐事件的語詞的連鎖涌現(xiàn)：
赤佬――是英語“CHEAT”和中文“佬”的混生詞語
小開――小KITE，小騙子之意，后引申為對有錢人的泛稱，有時也用為老開
門檻精――MonKEY精，猴子精，引申為聰明的、精明的
戇大――GANDER，傻瓜，呆鵝，糊涂蟲，引申為受騙者，現(xiàn)被北方人讀若“港督”
混槍勢――混CHANCE，混機會，引申為渾水摸魚
