The squire and his wife had， as they say in the society novels，"drifted apart．" Rarely were they seen at the old Hall，and never together． But the kindly old rector took the matterin hand， and by winning ways of his own affected a reconcilia tion．
The village was pleased at the new state of affairs，and presently was all agog at the news that a little stranger was ex pected at the Hall．
When informed of the interesting event， one sweet old la dy was highly delighted．
"I am so glad，" she said—"so very glad！ And to think that it was all the dear rector's doing！"

當一個可愛的老太太聽到這件趣事時，欣喜若狂。
“我真高興，”她說——“高興極了！想想這全是親愛的教區長干的。”
