一個單詞的發音和它的拼寫之間經常存在著差異。
人們并不是總是能從一個單詞的發音來判斷它的拼寫，也不能根據其拼寫來正確發音。比如說，英語中的這個音就有十二種拼寫形式：shoe， nation， schist， ocean， sure， mission， machine， special， mansion， nauseous， conscious and anxious.舉一個相反的例子，（ou）這個元音組合可以有五種發音方式，如在through， although， thought， tough和out這五個單詞中的發音。

The Spelling System of the English Language
One of the most difficult and confusing aspects of the English language is its spelling system. There is often a discrepancy between the pronunciation of a word and its spelling. One cannot always tell how to spell a word by its pronunciation nor how to pronounce it by its spelling. For example， there are twelve different ways to spell the soundin English： shoe， nation， schist， ocean， sure， mission， mac hine， special， mansion， nauseous， conscious and anxious are all examples of the different spellings for this sound. To give an opposite example， the vowel combination（ou） can be pronounced in at least five different ways， as in the words through， although， thought， tough and out.
