I am grateful that you offer me the chance to speak here. I am Liu Ming, a sophomore from Chinese Department. I am impressed by the speeches of the previous candidates. Yet, I want to prove myself better for the post of chairman of the Students Union.
First of all, I have a pleasant personality. Last year I was the dorm director of our building and I am managed to get along with all the students well. I have acquired working experience and communication skills which I consider as the most essential for the work of the whole students union.

美國總統競選常用語
美國總統大選每四年舉行一次。在大選年的前一年,準備競爭本黨總統候選人提名的人士就已經在各州積極展開競選活動了，為大選年早春開始的初選作準備。
各州的初選時間不一，在大選年上半年的五個月時間內陸續舉行，選拔出各州參加黨的全國大會的代表。而兩黨的全國大會往往都在大選年的夏天舉行。在這個大會上正式確定出本黨的一位總統候選人。然后各黨派的總統候選人要從夏天一直競選到11月初的大選日。
這樣看來總統競選過程相當漫長，而有志競選總統的人得奔波于各大城市間，出席政治性的餐會，尋求支持，并為競選募款。這些餐會場面浩大，但是菜肴通常毫不出色，主菜往往是煮過頭的雞。雞肉就像橡皮一樣，嚼之無味而且百嚼不爛。于是就產生了這個習慣用語: the rubber chicken circuit。
Rubber意思是橡皮，circuit解釋巡回旅行，顯然指那些候選人為競選而往返各地的旅行。他們每到一處就舉行募款餐會，主菜老是那些老而無味橡皮似的雞，當然醉翁之意不在酒，要緊的是候選人的即席講演，能說動與會者心甘情愿為他出錢出力。我們來聽個例子。
例句-1：The last stop for the senator on the rubber chicken circuit was Seattle, where 1200 supporters wrote checks for almost $500, 000 in campaign contributions for his presidential race.
他說：那位參議員舉行競選募款餐會行程上的最后一站是西雅圖。在那里有一千二百名支持者開了支票，為贊助他競選總統捐贈了幾乎五十萬美元。
這里的the rubber chicken circuit是去各地舉辦競選募款餐會的行程。
還有個有關競選的習慣用語: launch pad。 Launch是發射，pad這里是指平臺。所以launch pad就是發射臺?；鸺菑牡厣系暮窈竦乃嗯_上發往太空的。這筑起的水泥臺就是launch pad。但是launch pad被轉用到大選中，用來指開展某種活動吸引電視新聞界，以便當候選人在活動中宣布參選時有電視新聞記者為他大造聲勢。我們來聽個例子。
例句-2：The new candidate made his announcement during a speech to a war veterans group. He thought this was a good launch pad because he himself served as a soldier in the Vietnam war.

競選中用的習慣用語還有: dark horse。在賽馬中dark horse是一匹默默無聞、得勝希望渺茫的馬。那么dark horse用在競選中指什么呢? 我們聽個例子來琢磨它的意思。
例句-3：This young governor is a dark horse, because he comes from a small state and many voters in other states have never heard of him; he has a hard uphill road ahead of him.
他說：這位參選的州長年紀輕輕，而且來自一個小州；外州的許多選民根本從來沒聽說過他，所以他的競選前途該象走上坡路一般地艱難吃力。
這樣看來這里的dark horse是指默默無聞、成功希望渺茫的候選人，在競選中一名dark horse更是需要好的launch pad，來為他造就聲勢，擴大他的知名度。
