in april 1941, germany invaded greece through bulgaria and macedonia. greek and british commonwealth troops fought back but were overwhelmed. on 24 april, british forces, along with australian, new zealand, and polish troops, began to withdraw from greece. the mediterranean fleet evacuated more than 50,000 men over a six-day period.
the british first armoured brigade under brigadier charrington were the last guys at the evacuation. embarkation by rowing boat was painfully slow. when the beachmaster informed charrington that he could be put on a boat ahead of the rest, charrington exploded with anger:"who do you take me for?" he declared he would be going on the boats last.
