when stalin's oldest son yakov, commander of an artillery battery, was captured in 1941, stalin was offered a trade: the return of his son for the release of a german general. stalin rejected the offer. in 1943, yakov, suffering from nervous depression, threw himself on the prison camp's electrified barbed wire. he died almost instantly. a guard shot him four times, but he was already dead.
