Mata Hari was a Dutch-born dancer whose name is now commonly used to refer to a beautiful and seductive female spy.Mata Hari lived in Indonesia from 1897 to 1902, when she studied the Indonesian traditions intensively and joined a local dance company. In 1903, she moved to France, and her Oriental erotic dances soon made her world famous. The most celebrated segment of her performance was her progressive shedding of clothing until she wore just a jewelled bra. She became the mistress of high-ranking military officers, politicians, and others in influential positions in many countries, including the German crown prince.During World War I, Mata Hari was arrested in Paris with compromising documents on her. She was accused of spying for Germany and causing the deaths of 50,000 soldiers. She was tried and shot.
