in 1212, a 12-year-old french shepherd boy, stephen of cloyes, claimed that he had been visited by jesus and told to lead an army of children to peacefully convert muslims to christianity and recapture jerusalem. his words struck a chord among devout christians ashamed of the atrocities of earlier crusades. as many as 30,000 children were enlisted in the children's crusade.
stephen led the children south towards the mediterranean sea in the belief that the sea would part, allowing them to march to jerusalem. but this did not happen. they were eventually offered "free" passage by scoundrelly ship masters, only to be wrecked or sold as slaves to muslims.
