古德明英語軍事小故事：牛 油 麪 包(中英對照)
古德明《征服英語》之英語軍事故事，古德明，香港英語教育作家，他開了一個《征服英語專欄》，在專欄中專門用英語寫了世界近代史上的軍事小故事，用英語講述歷史中那些驚心動魄的戰爭。牛 油 麪 包nicolaus copernicus, the polish astronomer noted for his revolutionary theory about the earth revolving around the sun, is often credited with a gastronomic achievement.
in 1519, copernicus was put in charge of defending the polish city of allenstein on the prussian border. he found he was losing as many soldiers to a plague as he was to the enemy. suspecting a link between the plague and the soldiers' food, he divided the city into four sections. the residents of each section were fed different things, and the section that got no bread was plague free. evidently, something small and almost invisible was contaminating the black loaves, which were often dropped on the streets during transportaion. he therefore suggested covering the loaves with something gluey and light in colour, which would make it obvious if the loaves were contaminated. the immortal "bread and butter" was born.波 蘭 天 文 學 家 尼 古 勞 斯 ． 哥 白 尼 除 了 以 其 革 新 的 「 地 球 環 繞 太 陽 旋 轉 」 論 著 稱 ， 據 說 在 美 食 上 也 有 成 就 。
