as dawn broke over camden, south carolina, on 16 august 1780, the british launched a surprise attack on the americans, putting the untried militiamen to rout.
there was an american soldier named peter francisco, who was noted for his great size and strength. seeing an american cannon being left behind, he crouched beneath the 1100-pound cannon, lifted it onto his shoulder, and carried it to a position being held by the continentals. he then retired to a stand of trees, where he was approached by two british cavalrymen. in a split second, he knocked one of them from his saddle with his empty musket, and thrust his bayonet into the other man. he picked up one of the cavalrymen's swords, mounted his horse, and galloped away. on his way, he saw his own colonel being led away by two redcoats. so he charged, cutting down both of them, and then presented his horse to the colonel. both escaped.
