in september 1814, the british, who were at war with the americans, landed a warship near the massachusetts town of scituate. rebecca bates, the 22-year-old daughter of the town's lighthouse keeper, spotted the warship and saw two boats full of soldiers lowered into the sea. her father was not around, and there was no time to get to town to warn of the attack.
rebecca had a bold idea. there were a fife and a drum in the lighthouse. she grabbed the fife and handed the drum to her 16-year old sister abigail. the two young women then dashed outside.
hiding behind some trees, abigail and rebecca played "yankee doddle" for all they were worth. the british, thinking that the sound signalled the approach of the town militia, retreated hastily.
