while the pirate code in the 18th century explicitly forbade female crew members, there were two women pirates on jack rackham's pirate ship: anne bonny and mary read. they both disguised themselves as men, and in times of action no one else was as ruthless and bloodthirsty as these two women.
in 1720, after having wreaked havoc throughout the caribbean for more than a year, jack's ship was captured by a british navy sloop. jack and the other men were hanged. mary was also found guilty, but since she was pregnant, she received a temporary stay of execution. she died of a violent fever while in prison in 1721, before the birth of her child. there are scattered reports that she was repeatedly raped during her incarceration.
