in 1249, louis ix of france led a crusade against egypt, and occupied damietta. al-salih ayyub, the ayyubid sultan of egypt, was away fighting in syria, but quickly returned and encamped at al-mansourah, where he died after having his leg amputated in an attempt to save his life from a serious abscess affliction. his wife shajar-al-durr kept his death a secret. pretending that he was merely ill in the palace, she issued orders in his name and devised a strategy to cut the crusaders' supply line. finally, in 1250, the egyptians won the battle and captured louis ix, who had to be ransomed.
