in 1799, napoleon's troops, travelling through the desert en route to syria, made the mistake of slaking their thirst with leech-infested water. when the leeches affixed themselves to the insides of their noses and throats, hundreds of soldiers died of blood loss and suffocation.
in 1812, in order to finance his invasion of russia, napoleon set up a factory in paris to produce a unique product to be "traded" for military supplies. the product was -- counterfeit money.
