during the second world war, allied soldiers in the servigliano pow camp in italy were not badly treated. they were allowed to play football and cricket and have boxing tournaments. under the geneva convention, the italians gave them the same pay as their troops with a deduction for their accommodation.
one day, they were visited by the local padre. the british pows taught him an obscene word and claimed that it meant "good bye" in english. when leaving, he stopped with his arm in the air to bless everyone and said, "my friends, ****!" the whole congregation fell about laughing, and he must have thought, "these inglesi are pagans!"
