in the battle of the granicus in 334 bc, the first of three major battles fought between alexander the great and the persian empire, alexander came close to dying in combat. he led the horse companions in their wedge-shaped charge, and smashed into the centre of the persian line. in the melee, several persian nobles were killed by alexander himself or his bodyguards, but alexander was stunned by an axe blow from a persian nobleman named spithridates. before spithridates could deal a death blow, however, alexander's great friend clitus dashed forward, chopped off his arm and killed him. the battle ended in defeat for the persians.
