at the battle of rossbach in 1757, frederick the great's prussian army vanquished the opposing french and german forces while sustaining very few losses. indeed, such was the extent of the victory that several french officers were captured.
one evening frederick, hoping to lure the french away from the german alliance, invited his captives to dine with him. he was obliged, however, to apologise for the meagre portions. "gentlemen, i did not expect you so soon," he declared drily, "and in such large numbers!"
