in 813, the bulgar khan krum besieged constantinople. the byzantine emperor, leo v, unable to drive away his enemy, agreed to talk terms. he invited krum to come near the city and there he would meet him, both men to be accompanied by just three unarmed attendants. but leo had no intention of playing fair, and filled nearby houses with soldiers who would kill krum on a given signal.
the next day krum arrived by horse, and one of leo's attendants removed his helmet, which was the signal for the soldiers to attack. unknown to the byzantines, uncovering one's head in the khan's presence was a sign of severe disrespect. krum took instant offence, mounted his horse and rode away, just as the byzantine soldiers lying in ambush rushed out. krum made good his escape amidst a hail of arrows.
