in the opening up of the american west, sentry duty in the forts was usually a routine activity. but when indians planned a night attack, sentry duty could be dangerous.
one day at 8.20 am private harbers was on his beat when he found that private brown, who was on sentry duty, was missing. he hurried to rouse the corporal of the guard. when the guard came an officer hunted in the haystack and found brown with two arrows in his neck. he asked him why he had not called out, and brown said, "i did not want to give away my position until the indian showed himself. then i was going to get him."
