when a young officer, english general oglethorpe (1696-1785) was invited to a dinner at which the prince of wurttemberg was the guest. the prince took up a glass of wine; and, by a fillip, made some of it fly in oglethorpe's face. to have challenged the prince outright might have fixed a quarrelsome character upon oglethorpe, while to have taken no notice of it would have been considered as cowardice. oglethorpe, therefore, kept smiling, as if he took in jest what his highness had done, and said, "prince, that's a good joke; but we do it much better in england," and threw a whole glass of wine in the prince's face. an old soldier who sat by said, "he is in the right, prince, you began it!" the prince saw his error and, shaking oglethorpe by the hand, ended the whole thing in good humour.
