in 1654, a british expedition to capture jamaica from the spaniards suffered an ignominious defeat. as the boats carrying the british soldiers approached the shore, there was a rustling sound coming from within the dry reeds that fringed the beach. the men disembarked and cautiously moved towards the sound, only for the rustling to increase. fearing that the reeds contained a well-armed enemy force, the british soldiers turned and fled back to the boats and put out to sea, refusing to return in spite of their officers' orders.
later investigation revealed that the enemy who had put the british to flight were nothing more than hundreds of land crabs, which had been moving about among the reeds in alarm.
