one story about the american cavalry in the wild west tells of a mrs nash, company laundress in the 7th cavalry. she was always heavily veiled and remained with the regiment, “ married ” to a succession of husbands from the ranks of the 7th. as each husband was discharged, she bade him goodbye and “ married ” the next man.
in 1878, at fort meade, mrs nash was living with a corporal, but while he was on compaign she fell ill and died. when the garrison women were preparing her for burial, they discovered that “ she ” was in fact a man. the corporal, when he returned, received such a barracking from his men that he retired to his room and blew his brains out.
