on 1 july 1916, at the start of the battle of the somme, captain wilfred nevill of the 8th east surreys used the british love of football to inspire his men. he gave each of his four platoons a football, and offered a prize to the first of the platoons that managed to kick their ball into the german trenches. the idea was adopted enthusiastically by his men, and one platoon even inscribed their ball with this message : "the great european cup. the final. east surreys v bavarians." we will never know which of the platoons won the game, nor was nevill ever able to present his prize to the winners : he was killed, shortly after kicking off for one of the platoons.
