even during the second world war racial prejudice was present in the united states armed forces. on 7 december 1941, dorie miller, a black mess attendant, second class, was working on a battleship at pearl harbour. when the japanese bombers began their attack, miller ran up to the burning bridge to rescue the wounded captain and take him to safety. he then manned a machine gun, which had been abandoned by other sailors, and shot down four japanese planes. his heroism was so great that, under pressure from civil rights groups, he was promoted to mess attendant, first class. in 1944, miller died when the aircraft carrier on which he was working was torpedoed by a japanese submarine.
