it was common knowledge among the troops of both sides during the american civil war that union general george mcclellan and confederate general ambrose hill had been rivals for the hand of the beautiful nellie marcy while at west point. nellie had been undecided for some while and had flirted with both men before eventually marrying mcclellan.
it was noticeable that during mcclellan's campaigns around richmond in 1862 hill was always in the forefront of confederate attacks. union soldiers got so tired of being hit in flank or rear by hill's men that they attributed hill's actions to a personal vendetta. on one occasion, before the sun had even come up, hill's men began an attack. forced to roll out of their beds and take up arms, the union soldiers began to grumble, one veteran crying cut in disgust, “ my god, nellie, why didn't you marry him! ”
