while visiting his son in honduras in 1959, montgomery, then 72, met with guatemalan president ydigoras, who warned that if britain did not accede to guatemalan demands for a port on the caribbean, he might be forced to mount an invasion of british honduras. "oh, i wouldn't do that," montgomery replied. "in that case we would certainly send a force ourselves. i might be part of it and i'm not used to losing my battles."
no invasion took place.
一九五九年，七十二歲的蒙哥馬利往洪都拉斯看兒子，并會(huì)晤危地馬拉總統(tǒng)伊迪戈拉斯。伊迪戈拉斯警告說，假如英國不答應(yīng)在加勒比海給危地馬拉一個(gè)港口，他恐怕別無他法，惟有出兵進(jìn)侵英屬洪都拉斯。蒙哥馬利回答說：「我是你，就不會(huì)這樣做。你出兵，我們也一定會(huì)出兵，而我可能隨軍出征。我很少打敗仗。」
