while visiting his son in honduras in 1959, montgomery, then 72, met with guatemalan president ydigoras, who warned that if britain did not accede to guatemalan demands for a port on the caribbean, he might be forced to mount an invasion of british honduras. "oh, i wouldn't do that," montgomery replied. "in that case we would certainly send a force ourselves. i might be part of it and i'm not used to losing my battles."
no invasion took place.
