§35 寶篋鏡喻
(35) the mirror in a valuable case
昔有一人,貧窮困乏,多負人債,無以可償,即便逃避。至空曠處,值篋,滿中珍寶。有一明鏡,著珍寶上,以蓋覆之。貧人見已,心大歡喜,即便發之。見鏡中人,便生驚怖,叉手語言:“我謂空篋,都無所有;不知有君在此篋中,莫見嗔也?!?/p>
once upon a time there was a poor and weary man who was always in debt. insolvent, he hid himself in the wilderness where he found a valuable case full of precious things. a crystal mirror covered them. the poor man was most delighted to see them. he did not hesitate to take them. but he was frightened when he discovered a man's image in the mirror. twisting his hands, he said, "i thought it was nothing more than on empty case. i wasn't aware of your being in the case. don't get angry with me!" he then gave up the whole case.
凡夫之人,亦復如是。為無量煩惱之所窮困,而為生死、魔王、債主之所纏著。欲避生死,入佛法中修行善法,作諸功德,如值寶篋。為身見鏡之所惑亂,妄見有我,即便封著,謂是珍寶。于是墮落,失諸功德,禪定道品、無漏諸善、三乘道果,一切都失。如彼愚人,棄于寶篋,著我見者,亦復如是。
so are the people from all walks of life. those who are weary of countless annoyances in life and persecuted by the creditors of the transmigration devil, want to avoid them and free from them through their belief in buddhism. they begin to practice their faith and do good deeds just as the valuable case to the poor man. troubled by the man's image- in the mirror, they wrongly cling to the ego taken as the real. they fall decadent and lose all their merits acquired previously from meditation, monastic grade and good deeds. furthermore, they fail in their attainment of the nirvana from the three vehicles, just like the stupid man sticking to the prejudice of the ego and abandoning their precious findings in the case.
白話:
從前有一個人,貧窮困乏,欠了人家許多債,無錢可以償還,就逃走避債去了。到了一處空曠的地方,遇見一只箱子,內中裝滿了珍寶。有一面明鏡,放在珍寶上,用來蓋覆這些東西。貧人見了,心中異常地高興,即刻就打開來,見到鏡中有個人,不勝驚訝,且害怕起來,拱手說道:「我以為是空篋,一無所有的,不知有您在這篋中,請不要生氣?!?br>
世間的人也是這樣,受著無量煩惱的窮迫困擾,又受著生死魔王債主的纏著,想要逃避生死,就進入佛法中,修行善法,作種種功德,恰如遇見寶篋一般。受到對身體持真實之我的見解這面鏡子的惑亂,錯誤地以為有真實的我,即刻就封閉起來,與善法無緣了。于是墮落,失掉了種種功德,心體寂靜、止于一境的道法的品類,出離了煩惱的種種善法,歷經三乘由菩提之道證得槃盤之果,所有這一切都失卻了。像那愚人一樣,棄離了寶篋,執著于真實之我的見解的人,也是這樣。
這故事比喻∶世上的人,常被很多煩惱所纏繞,成為貧窮苦惱沒有福德者,又常為生死遷流的『魔王、債主』所逼迫著,因此欲求解脫生死的痛苦而修學佛法。他們作了種種的功德,這好像碰到了寶箱,可是又往往被『身見、我執』所惑亂,在無常無我中妄執有我。這『身見我執』譬如鏡中的面像,他們誤作真實,因此不能修成禪定道品等無漏功德的道果。這和已遇到寶箱而竟無所得是很相類似的。
源流:
《雜譬喻經》(后漢佚名譯)卷下:昔有長者子新迎(娶)婦,甚相愛敬。夫語婦言:「卿入廚中取蒲桃酒來共飲之。」婦往開甕,自見身影在此甕中,謂更有女人,大恚,還語夫言:「汝自有婦藏著甕中,復迎我為?」夫自入廚視之,開甕見己身影,逆恚其婦,謂藏男子。二人更相忿恚,各自呼為實。有一梵志與長者子素情親厚,過與相見,夫婦闘(dòu),問其所由,復往視之,亦見身影,恚恨長者:
「自有親厚藏甕中,而陽(佯)共闘乎?」即便舍去。復有一比丘尼,長者所奉,聞其所諍如是,便往視甕中,有比丘尼,亦恚舍去。須臾,有道人亦往視之,知為是影耳,喟然嘆曰:「世人愚惑,以空為實也?!购魦D共入視之,道人曰:「吾當為汝出甕中人。一取一大石,打壞甕,酒盡,了無所有。二人意解,知定身影,各懷慚愧。(《大正藏》第四冊第五o九頁)
《大智度論》卷八十九:如人闇(àn)中見似人物,謂是實人,而生畏怖:又如惡狗臨井,自吠其影,水中無狗,但有其相,而生惡心,投井而死。(《大正藏》第二十五冊第六九一頁)
《維摩詰所說經·觀眾生品》第七「菩薩云何觀于眾生」句下,僧肇撰《注維摩結經》卷六:「如一癡人行路,遇見遺匣,匣中有大鏡,開匣視鏡,自見其影,謂是匣主,稽首歸謝,舍之而走。」(《大正藏》第三十八冊第三八三頁)
《楞嚴經》卷四:室羅達城演若達多忽于晨朝以鏡照面,愛鏡中頭,眉目可見,瞋責己頭,不見面目,以為魑魅,無狀狂走。(《大正藏》第十九冊第一二一頁)
唐開元敦煌寫本殘卷《啟顏錄》:鄠縣董子尚村,村人并癡。有老父遣子將錢向市買奴,語其子曰:「我聞長安人賣奴,多不使奴預知之,必藏奴于余處,私相平章(洽談),論其價值,如此者是好奴也?!蛊渥又潦校阽R行(háng)中踱行,人列鏡于市,顧見其影,少而且壯,謂言(以為)市人欲賣好奴,而藏著鏡中,因指麾(指點)鏡曰:「此奴欲得幾錢?」市人知其癡也,誑之曰:「奴值十千?!贡愀跺X買鏡,懷之而去。至家,老父迎門問曰:「買得奴何在?」曰:「在懷中。」父曰:「取看好不?」其父取鏡照之,正見眉須皓白,面目黑皺,乃大瞋,欲打其子,曰:「豈有用十千錢,而貴買如此老奴?」舉杖欲打其子。其子懼而告母,母乃抱一小女走至,語其夫曰:「我請自觀之?!褂执蟛_曰:「癡老公,我兒止(只)用十千錢,買得子母兩婢,仍自嫌貴?」老公欣然。釋之余(把它放下之后),于處(放的地方)尚不見奴,俱謂奴藏未肯出。
