At an annual reunion dinner at Bristol Cathedral Choir School, an academy in Bristol, England, an old boy recounted a wartime incident."I was at the school during the war when a German bomber heading for aircraft factories was intercepted by fighters. It then turned back, and dropped its bombs over the city for increased speed of getaway. One made a direct hit on the school, and the headmaster was later dug out from the rubble, still alive and clutching his early morning glass of milk. Another demolished the Bishop's Palace*, which was next to the school."The headmaster had a nervous breakdown as a result of the bombing and had to resign.
"英格蘭布里斯托市有一專(zhuān)科學(xué)校，叫布里斯托大教堂唱詩(shī)班學(xué)校。在其一年一度的校友聯(lián)誼晚宴上，一位男校友談到戰(zhàn)時(shí)一件事。「大戰(zhàn)期間，一架德國(guó)轟炸機(jī)朝著飛機(jī)制造廠飛去，被戰(zhàn)機(jī)截?fù)簦纛^逃走，為求加快速度，在布里斯托市上空，投下炸彈。我當(dāng)時(shí)在學(xué)校里，學(xué)校被一枚炸彈炸個(gè)正著。救援者把校長(zhǎng)從瓦礫之中掘出來(lái)：他沒(méi)有喪命，手上還緊緊握著清晨喝的一杯牛奶。另一枚炸彈炸毀了校旁的主教府。「經(jīng)歷了這次轟炸，校長(zhǎng)精神崩潰，唯有辭職。」*Palace除了指「宮殿」，還可以指主教或大主教的宅第。
