In Japan-occupied China from 1937 to 1945, Japanese scientists used human guinea pigs to perform experiments at secret laboratories, the most infamous of which was Unit 731 in Manchuria, established in 1939 by a decree signed by Emperor Hirohito.Prisoners at Unit 731 were referred to as"logs". They were jabbed with needles and submerged in icy water, dissected alive without anaesthetic, electrocuted, injected with animal blood, or hung upside down until they died. Some were sealed inside pressure chambers that caused their eyes to pop out of their heads, and some had their stomachs removed and their esophagus connected to intestines. Screaming women were cut open so that their reproductive organs could be examined.One scientist at Unit 731 said,"I inserted the scalpel directly into the log's neck and opened the chest. There was a terrible scream, but the voice soon fell silent."
一九三七年至四五年，日本占領的中國地區有些秘密實驗室，供日本科學家以人充當天竺鼠做實驗，其中中國東北的七三一部隊最為惡名昭彰。這部隊一九三九年按裕仁天皇簽署的命令成立。七三一部隊稱其俘虜為「木頭」。俘虜或被身上插針，浸在冰水里；或被活活解剖，不施麻藥；或被電殛；或被注射動物血液；或被倒掛起來，直到死亡。有些則被關在壓力密室里，令他們眼球從頭顱爆出；有些被割去胃部，而以食道和腸接連。也有婦女慘叫著被切開，以便檢視女性生殖系統。七三一部隊的一個科學家說：「我把手術刀直插入木頭的脖子，剖開胸膛。木頭慘叫一聲，但不久就靜下來。」
