趣味英語：比石家莊還囧的幾個美國地名
前一陣子有不少人議論石家莊要不要改名，堅持要該的理由之一就是這個“莊”字有點土，與這個與首都為鄰的省會大都市的地位很不相稱翻成英語是village，撐死了也就是個town。這讓我想起在美國的一些towns的名字其實也很囧，比我們石家那個莊子有過之而無不及。
比如猶他州中部有個小鎮(zhèn)叫fillmore，聽上去就像在麥當勞加點可樂或者加油站再多加點油fill more。密執(zhí)根州有一個地方叫maybee，聽起來就是maybe（也許）。這不是個大地方，你開車可能都找不著，你跟人家打聽到“也許”還有多遠，對方如果知道，就會說“‘也許’10英里”。
紐約州有個鎮(zhèn)名叫flushing， flush在英語中的本意是“沖水”，加上ing成為現(xiàn)在分詞，所以flushing聽上去像是“沖啊”，和國內某些廁所內的標語意思差不多了。這個“沖啊”的地名還不止一個，密執(zhí)根州也有個鎮(zhèn)子叫flushing。同樣使用現(xiàn)代分詞作地名的還有俄勒岡的boring，煩著呢。
光是boring還不算什么，最不幸的地方是密執(zhí)根的小鎮(zhèn)hell，與地獄hell拼寫完全相同。關于這個倒霉名字的來歷，“地獄”人自己有個說法，據說很久很久以前，這個小鎮(zhèn)之父（所謂founding father）建議用他的名字為這個城市命名，就像美國國父華盛頓的名字成為首都那么風光。不料當地鎮(zhèn)民聽了齊聲喊no，結果那個“之父”生氣了： then call it hell（那就叫“地獄”吧）！不知道hell在哪里，google一下，你就知道。
