Every morning on his way to work, a businessman passed a house where he saw a woman beating her boy on the head with a loaf of bread. But on this particular day, he noticed that she was hitting him with a piece of chocolate cake.
每天早晨一位商人在上班途中都會經過一戶人家，他總是看見一個女人用一條面包打她兒子的頭部。但今天卻比較特別，他發(fā)現她正用一塊巧克力蛋糕打他的頭。
Unable to restrain his curiosity, he rang the doorbell and the woman answered.
他忍不住好奇，便按了那戶人家的門鈴。女人聽了鈴聲，出來開門。
“Madam, I couldn’t help but notice that every day you beat your child with a loaf of bread...”
“這位太太，每天經過這里我都忍不住會注意到你用一條面包打你兒子……”
“That’s true...”
“那倒是不假……”
“And yet today I observed that you were hitting him with a piece of chocolate cake.”
“可是今天我卻看見你用一塊巧克力蛋糕打他。”
“Well, today’s his birthday.”
“今天是他生日嘛。”
英語知識點解說：
1.on one's way to work 在某人上班途中
on one's way to school 在某人上學途中
on one's way home 在某人回家途中
例：John's the only guy I know who stops for a beer on his way to work.
（約翰是我所知唯一在上班途中會停下來喝啤酒的老兄。）
2.beat sb on the head 打某人的頭部
3.loaf n. 一條（面包）& vi.游手好閑
loaf 指的是一整條的面包，如土司、長條法國面包，但兩條以上要用復數形 loaves。
例：Stop loafing around, get down to work.
（別再混了，快工作去。）
4.particular特別的
例：Is there a particular reason (why) you want to join the army?
（你想當軍人有什么特別的理由嗎？）
5.restrain vt. 抑制；約束
restrain xb from V-ing 禁止某人做……
=prevent(hinder, ban, stop) sb from V-ing
=forbid sb to V
例：Grace couldn't restrain herself from blurting out the secret.
（葛麗絲無法守住任何秘密。）
Mom forbids me to stay out for the night.
（媽媽禁止我在外頭過夜。）
6.cannot help but V 由不得…… ；忍 不 住……
=cannot help V-ing
=cannot resist V-ing
=cannot but V
例：I couldn't help crying when I heard the sad story.
（聽到這悲傷的故事時，我忍不住哭了。）
You cannot help but feel sorry for a guy who loses his best friend and his wife on the same day—especially when they've run off together.
（要是某位老兄同時失去最要好的朋友和老婆，特別是他們一起私奔的情況，更令人不得不替他難過。）
7.observe vt. 觀 察；遵 守；慶 祝
observation n. 觀察（力）
observance n. 遵守
in observance of... 遵守……
例：Observe whatever he's doing.
（觀察他所做的每一件事。）
Keep the enemy under close observation, Major!
（密切監(jiān)視敵軍，少校！）
We should do things in observance of the law.
（我們做事均應守法。）
