Unit 14 Could You Hurry It up a Little? 你能不能快一點？
A man and his wife were cleaning out the attic when the husband found an ancient receipt.
一對夫婦正在清理閣樓，這時先生發現一張過期很久的舊收據。
“Hey, Nancy, look at this. It’s a receipt for a pair of shoes I left to be repaired and never picked up. It’s eleven years old.”
“嘿，南茜，你過來看看這個，這張是以前皮鞋送修的收據，我忘了去拿回來，足足有十一年之久了！”
“You know, that shoe repair shop is still there,” replied the wife. “Why don’t you just drop in there and hand him the receipt as if it were nothing unusual.”
“那間鞋店不是還在那里嗎？”妻子回答“。為什么不跑一趟，把收據交給他，就當作沒事發生一樣？”
And that is what the husband did. Quietly the cobbler went to the back of his shop and poked around a bit, came back to the counter and said, “They’ll be ready next Tuesday.”
先生去了那家鞋店。鞋匠靜靜地走到后頭，東翻西翻了一會兒之后， 到柜臺說道“：下星期二才能修好！”
英語知識點解說：
1.clean out... 清理……
例：Tom's first job on the ranch was to clean out the stables.
（湯姆在這個牧場的第一個工作就是清理馬房。）
2.attic n. 閣樓
3.ancient a. 古 代的；日的
4.receive vt. 接受
receipt n. 收 據
reception n. 接待
例：Be sure to get a receipt when you drop off your suit at the dry cleaners.
（你把西裝送到干洗店時，別忘了拿收據。）
The politician got a warm reception from the crowd-they threw gasoline bombs at him.
（這 位政客收到群眾熱情的接待他們向他丟了汽油彈。）
5.repair vt. & n. 修理
It's never too late to mend. 亡羊補牢，猶未晚也。（諺語）
be beyond repair 不能修理
例：The mechanic shook his head and said, "This wreck is beyond repair."
（技工搖搖頭說“：這個撞得太嚴重，沒辦法修理了。”）
6.pick up... 拾起／取……
例：If I don't pick up my laundry this afternoon, I won't have any underwear to wear tomorrow.
（如果我今天下午不去拿我在洗衣店里洗的衣服，明天我就沒內衣穿了。）
7.reply vi. 回答
8.drop in 偶然拜訪
其后不加賓語，若要加賓語，須再加介詞 on 。
drop in on sb 順道拜訪某人
例：Most people are not too happy when visitors drop in unexpectedly.
（多數人對于不速之客來訪都不太高興。）
Drop in on us when you have time.
（你有空時順道來看我們啊。）

10.poke vi. 摸索
poke about 亂翻東西
=poke around
例：He poked about in the bag for his car keys.
（他在袋子里翻來翻去要找他的汽車鑰匙。）
11.counter n. 柜臺
