when the germans invaded norway in april 1940, the british admiralty ordered captain warburton-lee to lead a flotilla of five destroyers to the norwegian port of narvik to prevent them from landing there. warburton-lee learned before he arrived that the germans had already occupied narvik, and that they held the place in much greater force than had been thought. he decided to take the enemy by surprise.
early on the morning of 10 april, under cover of a heavy snowstorm, the british entered the harbour and sank two german destroyers and six merchant ships, damaging another destroyer. when the british flotilla was withdrawing, five german destroyers were encountered and engaged. warburton-lee was heavily wounded by a shell that hit his ship's bridge. dying, he gave his last signal to his flotilla:"continue to engage the enemy."
