the first successful attempt by a slave population in the americas to throw off the yoke of western colonialism was led by toussaint l'ouverture.
a freed slave in the french colony of st dominique, now haiti, toussaint l'ouverture joined a black rebellion in 1791, and by 1797 was effective ruler of the colony. in 1802, he signed a treaty with the french, and agreed to retire from public life. however, at napoleon's orders he was treacherously seized and taken to a prison in the french alps, where he died of pneumonia in 1803.
years later, in exile at st helena, when asked about his dishonourable treatment of toussaint l'ouverture, napoleon remarked, "what could the death of one wretched negro mean to me?"
