during the american civil war, robert lee, commander of the confederate armies, one day visited general henry heth at petersburg to inspect the defences which he had asked to have completed, and was dismayed to find a large stretch entirely unfortified. heth assured him that the work would be undertaken immediately.
a few days later, however, lee discovered that the work had not yet begun. though clearly annoyed, lee held his tongue, and to heth's relief launched into a dissussion of the temperamental horse heth's wife was riding. breaking in such a horse, lee declared, required plenty of exercise. "i know of no better place for you to ride the horse than just up and down in front of the gap that i ordered you to have closed."
