at the outbreak of the first world war in 1914, many of the british soldiers from farming communities billeted in the towns had difficulty adjusting to the refuse system used in towns and cities. accustomed to a rubbish pit as a suitable place for household waste, they were at a loss to understand the function of the urban dustbin.
assuming that a container of that size must be intended for a week's supply, many of them brewed up dustbins full of tea, while continuing to throw their rubbish into the gardens of their irate landlords.
