For more than a month in 1895, a British garrison on India's Northwest Frontier was besieged by Chitrali tribesmen. The relief force sent to the defenders' rescue noticed a native standing on a high peak with a signalling flag. Private George Pridmore gave an account of what happened: "As he watched our operations with the batteries, he signalled the result of each shot for the benefit of his comrades. Thus we saw him making the usual signals for 'too high', 'too low', 'on the right', and so on. Of course that sort of thing was not convenient, so we sent a shell and blew the signaller all to pieces. The moment he was hit, another native sprang to the spot, caught up the flag, and signalled a bull's eye!"
一 八 九 五 年 ， 印 度 西 北 邊 區 一 支 英 國 駐 軍 被 奇 特 拉 利 族 人 圍 攻 了 一 個 多 月 。 奉 命 前 去 解 圍 的 軍 隊 ， 看 見 一 個 土 人 手 持 信 號 旗 站 在 高 山 上 。 二 等 兵 喬 治 ． 普 里 莫 爾 描 述 了 這 件 事 ： 「 他 望 我 們 操 縱 大 炮 ， 用 信 號 把 每 次 射 擊 結 果 通 知 他 的 同 袍 。 我 們 見 到 他 發 出 『 太 高 』 、 『 太 低 』 、 『 落 在 右 邊 』 等 常 用 信 號 。 這 當 然 很 不 好 ， 我 們 于 是 發 炮 把 那 信 號 員 炸 得 粉 身 碎 骨 。 他 才 被 擊 中 ， 另 一 個 土 人 就 跑 上 前 ， 拾 起 信 號 旗 ， 發 出 『 正 中 靶 心 』 信 號 ！ 」
【 附 注 】 Bull's eye 也 作 bull's-eye ， 直 譯 是 「 公 牛 眼 」 ， 一 般 解 作 「 靶 心 」 ， 原 因 難 考 。 To hit the bull's eye 是 「 擊 中 靶 心 」 ， 可 引 伸 解 作 「 正 中 要 害 」 或 「 達 到 目 標 」 ， 例 如 ： (1)My arrow hit (outside of) the bull's eye （ 我 一 箭 射 中 靶 心 / 射 在 靶 心 外 ） 。 (2)The novelist's new work hit the bull's eye （ 那 小 說 家 的 新 作 十 分 成 功 ） 。
