a cuban revolt against the spanish colonial government was practically over in february 1898 when the american battleship maine, riding at anchor in havana harbour, suddenly exploded. the destruction of the ship outraged american public opinion, which without waiting for evidence held the spanish responsible, and newspaper publisher william randolph hearst sent to cuba the artist frederic remington, who specialised in the depiction of warfare.
the expected conflict between the united states and spain did not immediately materialise, however, and remington cabled hearst : should he return home? hearst promptly cabled back : "please remain. you furnish the pictures, and i'll furnish the war."
