"Why do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?" replied Lincoln.
美國南北戰(zhàn)爭期間，林肯總統(tǒng)在一個官方招待會上稱南人為「誤入歧途的人」，受到一位支持聯(lián)邦軍的長者斥責：「你應該設法消滅敵人，為甚么談到他們還那么溫厚？」
林肯回答說：「化敵為友，為甚么不等于消滅敵人？」
【解說】英文有一句成語：To err is human, to forgive divine （ 犯 錯 乃 人 之 常 情 ， 寬 恕 惟 圣 人 能 之 ） 。 讀 者 大 概 都 認 識 error （ 錯 誤 ） 這 個 名 詞 ， 動 詞 err 卻 較 為 少 見 。 除 了 上 述 成 語 ， to err on the side of something 這 說 法 也 該 認 識 。 這 是 「 太 過 … … 」 的 意 思 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） It is better to err on the side of safety than to risk your life （ 過 分 安 全 ， 總 勝 過 冒 性 命 危 險 ） 。 （ 2 ） As a judge, I would rather err on the side of mercy （ 身 為 法 官 ， 我 寧 錯 毋 枉 ） 。
To err is human, to forgive divine 一 語 ， 用 了 縮 略 法 （ ellipsis ） ： 前 后 子 句 （ clause ） 文 法 結 構 相 同 ， 相 同 的 字 就 可 略 去 。 這 一 句 主 詞 （ subject ） ， to forgive 之 后 的 動 詞 is 就 略 去 了 。 有 時 ， 略 去 的 字 會 用 一 逗 點 （ comma ） 取 代 ， 例 如 ： To err is human, to forgive, divine 。
