The Pears
One day Mrs Haldon went to her father's house with her four children for a visit. Their grandfather brought the children four beautiful golden pears, and expressed his sorrow that he couldn't find other pears which were ripe enough.
“Try and work out a way to divide these four pears between five people,” he said to them, “without using fractions.”
“Let me do it,” said Joan, the elder daughter, “provided you let me mix up the odd numbers and the even numbers.”
She took the pears and said: “One pear and two sisters make three; one pear and my two brothers make three also; these two pears and one mother again make three. It seems to me that everything works out right without using fractions.”
The children were very happy with this division but their mother, very satisfied, nonetheless insisted that the children each take a pear and her father was pleased to give a beautiful bunch of flowers to Joan for her ingenious method and especially for her kindness.
