between july and september 1942, the nazis shipped 300,000 jews from the warsaw ghetto to"labour camps". when word reached the ghetto that the destination was actually the gas chambers at treblinka, the newly formed jewish fighting organization zob prepared for resistance.
on 19 april 1943, the warsaw ghetto uprising began after german troops entered the ghetto to deport its remaining 55,000 inhabitants. the zob and guerrillas armed with pistols and homemade bombs fought the german troops supported by tanks and flamethrowers till their ammunition ran out. many of the surviving zob fighters took their own lives to avoid being captured, but several dozen fighters escaped through the sewers. during the 28 days of the uprising, approximately 7,000 jews were killed. german losses were 16 dead and 85 wounded.
