on the outbreak of world war i, german armed forces invaded belgium, which had been declared a neutral country by the treaty of london in 1839. britain, which was committed to the defence of belgium by this treaty, declared war on germany, and the british expeditionary force was sent to belgium. they met the advancing german army at mons, a town in southern belgium, and heavily outnumbered were soon forced to retreat. the soldiers reported their bitterest experience was in tramping over a strip of cloth in a small belgium town bearing the words, "welcome to our saviours the british."
