during the struggle for control of southern italy between king pyrrhus （ 318?-272 bc ） of epirus and the romans led by fabricius, pyrrhus's physician wrote to febricius offering to poison his master to end the war. fabricius detested the wickedness of the physician, and wrote to pyrrhus, with the physician's letter attached, bidding him take heed. "we do not want to be accused of seeking to end this war by treachery, as though by valiantness we could not otherwise achieve it."
pyrrhus, having read fabricius's letter, and proved its contents true, executed the physician. and to requite fabricius for his warning, he sent the romans their prisoners, without paying of ransom.
