the athenian philosopher antisthenes, founder of the school of cynics which advocated a life of simplicity, was said to dress with ostentatious poverty. "i can see your vanity, antisthenes," socrates once observed, "through the holes in your cloak."
socrates philosophised even when he was on the threshold of death. "the hour of departure has arrived," he told plato, "and we go our ways ─ ─ i to die, and you to live. which is better, god only knows."
雅典哲學家安提西尼創立犬儒學派，以儉樸為教。據說，他衣要有意顯得貧困。蘇格拉底曾經對他說：「安提西尼，在你披風的破洞之下，我看到另一種虛榮。」
