Something That You Know
Rachmanin off was a very famous pianist and composer of music． He liked to tell this story about himself．
"When I was a very small boy I once played at a party atthe home of a Russian nobleman． I was only eight years old．But I had been playing the piano for several years． I played well．The piece which I played was the‘Kreutzer Sonata’by Beet hoven． I played the piece very well． At least I thoughtso．"
"But the‘Kreutzer Sonata，' as you know， has in it sev eral very long rests． In each of these rests I took my handsfrom the piano and waited． To me this was very dramatic． Butit seems that the mother of the nobleman thought differently．Finally， during one of these rests she came over to me．Shetouched me on the head kindly and said：‘My boy， why don'tyou play us something that you know？’"

拉赫馬尼諾夫是一個非常著名的鋼琴家和作曲家。他喜 歡講這一段關于他自己的故事：
“當我還是個小男孩的時候，有一次我在一個俄國貴族家舉行的晚會上演奏。當時我年僅八歲，但是我彈鋼琴已經有幾個年頭了。我彈得很好。我那天彈的曲子是貝多芬的‘克萊采奏鳴曲’，這曲子我彈得很好。至少我是這么認為的。”
“可是你也知道，‘克萊采奏鳴曲’中間有幾次長的停頓。每一次停頓我都把手從鋼琴上放下來，等著。對我來說，這是極有戲劇性的。但是那位貴族的母親好像對此另有看法。終于，在一次停頓中她走到我的跟前。她親切地摸摸我的腦袋，說：“我的孩子，為什么不給我們彈一支你熟悉的樂曲呢？”
