in 272 bc, king pyrrhus invaded argos, where one side in the civil war there had requested him to intervene. one night, with the help of the city's traitors, pyrrhus entered argos with his army by stealth. the people of argos hurriedly set up a defence.
at dawn, pyrrhus saw a bronze statue of a bull fighting a wolf. this brought to mind a prophecy that he had heard years before, which was that he would die on the day he saw a wolf and a bull fighting. so pyrrhus tried to get out of the city. however, there were so many of his men, some on horses and elephants, pushing to get in that he could not get out. during this melee, an old woman threw a tile down from her roof, and it happened to hit pyrrhus on the neck. stunned, pyrrhus fell off his horse, and an enemy cut off his head.
